By combining science and art, dentists can use state-of-the-art materials and techniques to repair, reshape, and recolor broken, chipped, cracked, malformed, widely spaced, discolored or stained teeth. There are several procedures we use: bonding, veneers, whitening, crowns and orthodontics. For this article we'll discuss bonding.

For a relatively short time in the dental chair, bonding offers dramatic results. Using composite resins--durable plastic compounds that look like ceramics--we can fill in broken, chipped, or cracked teeth; or gaps between teeth. Stained or discolored teeth can also be masked with composite resins. The process is painless, reversible, and less expensive than conventional "caps." First, the teeth to be bonded are etched with a mild acid solution to help the composite resins adhere. Then we mix and tint the resin to match your teeth. The putty-like composite resin is applied to the teeth in layers and sculpted into the proper form. Colors are carefully blended and highlighted so the bonded teeth reflect light and look completely natural.

The resin must be hardened, or cured, using either a special bonding light or a chemical process. Trimming and shaping come next to achieve the perfect contours. Finally, the bonded teeth are polished to a high luster.

Bonding lasts about three to five years and requires a periodic renewal. Like natural teeth, bonded surfaces can be chipped by applying too much pressure on teeth, such as chewing forcibly on hard surfaces, or stained by coffee, tea, various foods, and tobacco. If this occurs, rebonding is needed. We have dramatic before and after photographs of this successful process. Bonding enhances smiles - take a moment to view the results.
